She left her finance job to address clothing waste and created 8,000 jobs

Tracey Chambers, a former head of finance at Woolworths, transitioned from corporate success to social entrepreneurship after feeling a disconnect with her family life and a desire to help disadvantaged women. In 2009, after two years of reflection and discussions with her husband, she left her job to pursue a new path. Together with Tracey Gilmore, she founded The Clothing Bank in 2010, which repurposes excess retail clothing to empower single mothers by enabling them to resell these items. The initiative started in an unused orphanage, aiming to create sustainable business opportunities for women rather than simply providing donations. This model addresses both the issue of clothing waste and the economic empowerment of women, particularly in South Africa, where over 60% of mothers are single.

Why It Matters

The Clothing Bank exemplifies a growing trend in social entrepreneurship that seeks to tackle systemic issues like poverty and waste through sustainable business practices. With a significant percentage of South Africa’s mothers being single, initiatives like this provide critical support and income opportunities for vulnerable populations. The retail industry is known for its waste, with 3-5% of clothing ending up as waste annually, highlighting the importance of solutions that address both environmental and social challenges. By transforming excess clothing into business opportunities, The Clothing Bank contributes to the circular economy while directly impacting women’s livelihoods.
