BOSTON — While most runners will spend the entire day completing the 2024 Boston Marathon, the race winners have already crossed the finish line on Boylston Street. Monday saw a mix of repeat winners and new faces breaking the tape before anyone else.
Hellen Obiri wins Boston Marathon women’s race
Hellen Obiri of Kenya secured her second consecutive Boston Marathon women’s race victory with an unofficial time of 2:22:37. She becomes the first back-to-back winner since Catherine Ndereba of Kenya won in 2004 and 2005.
From a pack of 20 runners, Obiri and Sharon Lokedi emerged as the final two contenders for the last miles of the race on Monday. Obiri surged ahead in the closing stretch, claiming another Boston victory.
Lokedi finished second with a time of 2:22:45, followed by Edna Kiplagat in third place at 2:23:21, making it a Kenyan sweep of the top three spots in the women’s race. Buze Diriba and Senbere Teferi, both from Ethiopia, completed the top five with identical times of 2:24:04.
Sisay Lemma wins Boston Marathon men’s race
Sisay Lemma of Ethiopia led from start to finish, securing victory with an unofficial time of 2:06:18, the 10th fastest time in Boston Marathon history. Despite a late challenge, Lemma maintained his lead to claim the win, improving on his 2019 performance of 30th place.
Mohamed Esa of Ethiopia finished second with a time of 2:06:58, followed by defending champion Evans Chebet in third at 2:07:22. The top five was completed by Kenyans John Korir (2:07:40) and Albert Korir (2:07:47).
C.J. Albertson was the top American finisher, placing seventh overall with a time of 2:09:53, his best finish in Boston to date.
Eden Rainbow-Cooper wins Boston Marathon women’s wheelchair race
Newcomer Eden Rainbow-Cooper from Great Britain claimed victory in the women’s wheelchair division, finishing with an unofficial time of 1:35:11. She became the first British woman to win the Boston Marathon wheelchair race, adding to her triumph in the Boston 5K on Saturday.
Rainbow-Cooper held off a challenge from Manuela Schar to secure the win, crossing the finish line with a 30-second lead.
Schar finished second with a time of 1:35:41, followed by Madison De Rozario (1:39:20), Patricia Eachus (1:40:22), and Aline Dos Santos Rocha (1:41:47).
Michelle Wheeler was the top American finisher in the women’s wheelchair race, clocking a time of 1:45:59.
Marcel Hug wins Boston Marathon men’s wheelchair race and sets another course record
Switzerland’s Marcel Hug clinched his seventh Boston Marathon men’s wheelchair race victory and set a new course record. Hug finished with an unofficial time of 1:15:32, breaking his own record from the previous year.
Despite a collision with the wall, Hug maintained his lead and crossed the finish line ahead of the competition. Daniel Romanchuk of Maryland finished second with a time of 1:20:37, followed by David Weir (1:22:12), Sho Wantanabe (1:26:10), and Joshua Cassidy (1:26:15).
Romanchuk was the top American finisher in the men’s wheelchair race, followed by Aaron Pike (1:28:35) and Evan Cornell (1:30:31).
