Sentencing for Former Deputy
Sean Grayson, a former Sangamon County deputy, is scheduled for sentencing on Thursday after being convicted of second-degree murder for the 2024 shooting of Sonya Massey, an unarmed Black woman who called 911 for help. Grayson’s trial took place in Peoria due to pretrial publicity, and he faces a prison sentence ranging from four to 20 years. During the incident, Grayson claimed to feel threatened by Massey, despite his partner testifying that Massey posed no danger. Massey’s family will have the opportunity to speak in court during the sentencing hearing.
