Drones Identify Virus in Whales’ Breath

Researchers have utilized drones equipped with petri dishes to collect whale blow samples in the Arctic Circle, discovering cetacean morbillivirus, a highly infectious virus threatening whales, dolphins, and porpoises. This virus is linked to numerous strandings and can severely impact marine health. The study, conducted by King’s College London and Nord University, aims for long-term surveillance of whale health without causing harm. The findings raise concerns about potential outbreaks during winter, when marine species come into closer contact.
