School vaccination rates decline to record low as exemptions rise

U.S. kindergarten vaccination rates declined for the fourth consecutive year, with exemptions rising to 4.2%, marking the highest level recorded. This translates to approximately 155,000 children nationally for the 2025-26 school year, with the majority of exemptions attributed to nonmedical reasons. The increase in exemptions was noted in 41 states and the District of Columbia. Experts attribute this trend to confusion surrounding vaccination guidelines fueled by federal health officials, including U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has advocated for changes in childhood vaccination recommendations. The CDC reported that only 92.4% of kindergartners received their required measles-mumps-rubella vaccine, a drop from pre-pandemic levels of 95%, raising concerns about potential outbreaks as more children enter school unvaccinated.

Why It Matters

The decline in vaccination rates among kindergartners is significant due to the potential for increased disease outbreaks, especially with measles cases surging to their highest levels since 1991. Historical data shows that high vaccination rates are essential for community immunity, preventing the spread of contagious diseases. While states require vaccinations for school attendance, the rise in nonmedical exemptions has led to increased vulnerability among children, particularly in areas with higher concentrations of unvaccinated individuals. This trend poses a public health risk, as a significant number of children are now susceptible to preventable diseases that could lead to serious health consequences and strain healthcare systems.
