Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is launching a startup called World, which aims to address the challenge of proving human identity in a world filled with bots and AI. The company is distributing 20,000 retina-scanning devices, known as Orbs, to create digital IDs that verify a person’s humanity without storing biometric data, responding to privacy concerns raised during its initial launch in 2023. The U.S. rollout will occur in six cities, linking the verification process to the World App for decentralized finance and cryptocurrencies, as the regulatory environment becomes more favorable under the Trump administration.
