South Africa has launched an Astro-Tourism Strategy to capitalize on its astronomical infrastructure, including the Southern African Large Telescope and the Square Kilometre Array project, to drive scientific advancement and tourism growth. This innovative strategy, presented by Minister Blade Nzimande and Deputy Minister Maggie Sotyu, aims to attract high-value travelers seeking stargazing experiences, create employment opportunities, and strengthen South Africa’s reputation as a hub for astronomical exploration. By integrating astronomy with tourism, the country is set to enhance its infrastructure and draw international tourists, solidifying its position in the scientific tourism sector.
