Christoph Heinrich Huelsmann, an experienced tramper from Lower Hutt, was in the path of one of the falling boulders. His partner, Esther Feldmann, shouted a warning, prompting Huelsmann to run for safety. Unfortunately, he was struck by a rock and fell approximately 20 meters, coming to rest about 10 meters from Feldmann.
