Women send 5000 emails to Prime Minister Luxon over gender pay gap

An advocacy group has sent approximately 5,000 invoices to New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon from women seeking compensation for lost wages attributed to the gender pay gap. The current gender pay gap in New Zealand stands at 5.2%, the lowest recorded since tracking began. However, disparities are more pronounced for Māori and Pacific women in comparison to their pākehā counterparts. The initiative, organized by the group Still Minding the Gap, aims to draw attention to the ongoing wage inequalities. In response, Luxon acknowledged receipt of the emails and noted improvements in the pay gender gap, comparing New Zealand’s progress favorably to that of Australia and the UK.

Why It Matters

The gender pay gap is a significant issue globally, affecting women’s economic status and career advancement. In New Zealand, while the overall pay gap has decreased, specific demographics like Māori and Pacific women still face larger disparities. The historical context of gender wage inequality underscores the importance of targeted advocacy and policy reforms to address these systemic issues. Efforts to raise awareness, such as the recent campaign, emphasize the continued need for action to ensure equal pay for equal work across all demographics.
