Rutgers football ranks 56th in ESPN college football future power rankings

ESPN’s recent ranking of power conference college football teams for the 2027 season has placed Notre Dame at the top, followed by Ohio State and Texas. Rutgers University has dropped to 56th, a decline of 13 spots from the previous year’s assessment. The analysis, which evaluates teams based on quarterback situation, offensive and defensive line prospects, coaching staff, roster management, and star power, highlights significant changes for Rutgers. The departure of quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis, who had a strong senior season, leaves a competition between Boston College transfer Dylan Lonergan and AJ Surace. Additionally, while Rutgers retained key players like running back Antwan Raymond and receiver KJ Duff, they lost several contributors to the transfer portal, including wide receiver Ian Strong and offensive tackle Taj White. This has led to concerns about the team’s future prospects.

Why It Matters

Rutgers’ drop in the rankings reflects broader challenges faced by the program, including a transition at quarterback and significant roster turnover. Historically, college football teams that experience substantial player departures often struggle in subsequent seasons, particularly if they are not able to effectively recruit or retain talent. As the Scarlet Knights aim to rebuild, their ability to navigate these issues will be critical to improving their standing in future rankings. The performance of their new quarterback and the overall team cohesion will be vital in determining their trajectory heading into the 2027 season.
