Russia’s Gazprom will halt gas supplies to Moldova on Jan. 1 over alleged unpaid debt, risking power cuts in the EU candidate country. Moldova accuses Moscow of weaponizing energy supplies as Gazprom claims a $709 million debt, disputed by Moldova as $8.6 million. Moldova’s government plans to reduce energy consumption and diversify gas supplies after pro-Western President Sandu’s reelection and EU referendum in October.
