Russia sees shift from Trump towards recognising ‘realities’ in Ukraine

Last week, Trump acknowledged Russia’s opposition to Ukraine joining NATO due to concerns about having a hostile presence on its doorstep. Russia controls a significant portion of Ukraine and recently declared four Ukrainian regions as part of its territory, sparking condemnation from the UN. While Russia is open to discussing security guarantees for Ukraine, it also seeks assurances regarding its own safety on its western borders. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy insists on NATO membership and US security guarantees, as fears grow about potential concessions if Trump withdraws US military support. Additionally, Lavrov addressed Trump’s comments about potentially acquiring Greenland, stating the need to respect the self-determination of its people.
