What You Need to Know
• The International Olympic Committee advised sports bodies to end a vetting program for Russian athletes.
• This decision precedes the qualifying events for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, scheduled to begin in 2028.
• Just 32 athletes from Russia and Belarus competed at the 2024 Paris Olympics as approved neutrals, winning five medals.

The International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry announced on Tuesday that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) advised Olympic sports organizations to discontinue a three-year program that evaluated Russian athletes for neutral status ahead of qualifying events for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This decision follows the IOC’s previous recommendation that athletes from Belarus, a close ally of Russia, be permitted to compete under their national identity. The IOC also lifted its suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, which had been in place since October 2023, due to the Russian Olympic body’s incorporation of regional sports councils from occupied areas of Ukraine. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, only 32 athletes from Russia and Belarus participated as approved neutrals, collectively securing five medals.

Why It Matters

The IOC’s decision to end the vetting program for Russian athletes is significant as it reflects the evolving stance of the organization regarding athletes from nations involved in geopolitical conflicts. The IOC has maintained support for the Ukrainian Olympic community since the onset of the war in Ukraine, emphasizing solidarity. The upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will be a critical event for Russian athletes, as they seek to regain their full competitive status. Historically, the Russian Olympic team had a strong presence, winning 71 medals at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, highlighting the impact of these changes on future competitions.
