Kremlin-aligned former president expected to win Bulgarian election

SOFIA, Bulgaria — The center-left coalition led by ex-president Rumen Radev has decisively won Bulgaria’s parliamentary election, according to the country’s central electoral commission. The Progressive Bulgaria coalition garnered 44.6% of the vote, significantly outpacing the center-right GERB party and the pro-Western We Continue the Change bloc, which received 13.4% and 12.6%, respectively. Following the results, Boyko Borissov of GERB conceded defeat and congratulated Radev. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, also congratulated Radev, emphasizing Bulgaria’s role in Europe. Radev, who has been seen as sympathetic to Russia, plans to pursue a “European path” but insists on critical thinking and pragmatism in governance. He resigned from the presidency to seek the more powerful role of Prime Minister, aiming to combat corruption and improve the stability of Bulgaria’s political landscape.

Why It Matters

Bulgaria has faced political instability over the past two years, with multiple governments failing to last due to public protests and parliamentary conflicts. The recent election results may signal the end of this fragmentation, offering a chance for a more stable government capable of addressing systemic issues like corruption, which has plagued the country for years. Radev’s victory comes amid criticism of Bulgaria’s handling of corruption and rule of law, and his leadership may influence Bulgaria’s position within the European Union, especially regarding relations with Russia and Ukraine. The outcome of this election could significantly impact Bulgaria’s political landscape and its integration within European frameworks.
