Russia agrees to follow expired nuclear arms limits treaty
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Russia has agreed to adhere to the limits of the New START nuclear arms treaty, which expired on February 5, 2023, contingent on the U.S. doing the same. The treaty’s expiration raises concerns about a potential nuclear arms race, as it was the first time in over 50 years that there were no restrictions on the two largest nuclear arsenals. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov indicated that Moscow would monitor U.S. policies and is open to negotiating a new agreement. The treaty, signed in 2010, capped each nation at specific limits for deployed nuclear weapons.
