Heglig is Sudan’s largest oil field and also the main processing facility for neighbouring South Sudan’s oil exports.
The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have seized control of Sudan’s Heglig oilfield, as confirmed by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), which withdrew from the area. This takeover is part of the RSF’s efforts to expand its territory amid ongoing conflict with the SAF. The RSF claims it has established a task force to secure the oil installations, crucial for both Sudan and South Sudan’s oil exports. Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in civil war, resulting in significant casualties and humanitarian crises.
