Romania's election body rejects far-right Diana Sosoaca's presidential bid, approves George Simion

The Central Election Bureau of Romania rejected the candidacy of far-right politician Diana Sosoaca for the presidential election rerun in May, citing her opposition to EU and NATO memberships as grounds for exclusion. However, the bureau approved George Simion, leader of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians party, despite being under criminal investigation. Last year’s election was annulled due to Russian interference allegations, leading to a political crisis and a rise in far-right support in Romania.
