Prolonged Road Traffic Noise Exposure Linked to Increased Parkinson’s Disease Risk

A large-scale study in Denmark has found a link between long-term exposure to road traffic noise and an increased risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. The research, which involved 3.1 million participants aged 40 and older, revealed that for every 11.5 dB increase in noise levels at the most exposed side of a home, the risk of Parkinson’s disease rose by 3%. The study, published in JAMA Neurology, followed participants for 18 years and utilized nationwide health register data, making it the largest investigation of its kind. The findings suggest that having a quieter area in the home may help mitigate the risks associated with noise pollution. This study is among the first to establish a direct connection between noise pollution and neurological disorders, expanding the understanding of environmental risk factors beyond toxins like air pollution and pesticides.
