Rick Mahorn, a former NBA player and member of the Detroit Pistons’ “Bad Boys” team, has returned to coaching as the head coach of the Detroit Amps in the BIG3 league. Mahorn, who spent 18 seasons in the NBA and won a championship with the Pistons in 1989, expressed his commitment to giving back to the city that he considers home. After coaching various teams, including the Detroit Shock, Mahorn joined the BIG3 in 2017, where he led the Trilogy to the league’s first championship. Now, he takes over the Amps, succeeding Hall of Famer George Gervin. Despite a challenging start this season with the Amps losing their first two games, Mahorn remains passionate about mentoring young players and fostering a professional environment.

Why It Matters

Rick Mahorn’s return to coaching in Detroit highlights the ongoing relationship between former athletes and their communities, particularly in sports. The BIG3 league, founded in 2017, has provided a platform for retired players to remain active in the sport while contributing to their local fan base. Mahorn’s history with the Pistons and his coaching experience reflects the importance of mentorship in basketball, as he aims to instill professionalism in the next generation of players. The Amps’ performance in the league could impact local interest and support for the BIG3, emphasizing the significance of community engagement in professional sports.
