A lion statue at Weelsby Woods in Grimsby, which was repaired after being damaged by a car in 2023, has drawn criticism from locals for its appearance, leading to it being dubbed ‘ugly’ and covered with a ‘bag of shame’. Originally carved in 1876, the statues were altered to match each other, but many residents found the reworked lion’s face to resemble caricatures of famous figures. Despite the backlash, some, including Councillor Harry Hudson, praised the restoration, claiming the pair look better than ever.
