A lion statue at Weelsby Woods in Grimsby, which was repaired after being damaged by a car in 2023, has drawn criticism from locals for its appearance, leading to it being dubbed ‘ugly’ and covered with a ‘bag of shame’. Originally carved in 1876, the statues were altered to match each other, but many residents found the reworked lion’s face to resemble caricatures of famous figures.
