Enver Solomon, chief executive of the Refugee Council, urged ministers to open new routes into the UK for those fleeing conflict or persecution, stating that the current approach is ineffective. In 2024, at least 69 deaths were reported among migrants crossing the English Channel, making it the deadliest year on record. The total number of migrants crossing the Channel in 2024 was 36,816, prompting calls for more safe and legal routes to prevent further loss of life.
