In Ukraine, vulnerable displaced individuals are faced with the difficult choice of staying far from home with diminishing aid or returning to conflict-affected areas with limited safety and essential services. Despite ongoing violence, an estimated 1.6 million people have returned to areas near the front lines since February 2022, as many struggle to cope away from home, exhausting savings and accumulating debt. The situation in heavily affected areas is dire, with increasing challenges in providing basic necessities and humanitarian aid, especially for the elderly who are most at risk, as uncertainty around US funding threatens essential assistance.
