Solar and wind power provided more electricity than coal and gas last year, leading a global trend, said think tank Ember.
For the first time, solar and wind power generated 30% of EU electricity, surpassing coal and gas at 29%, according to Ember’s European Electricity Review. The growth is attributed to a surge in solar installations, particularly rooftop panels, driven by geopolitical factors. While the EU is transitioning away from fossil fuels, the U.S. saw a 2.4% rise in emissions due to increased coal use. Experts caution that rapid capacity additions may lead to oversupply issues without adequate storage solutions.
