CJI concerned about AI drafting petitions in Supreme Court

India’s Supreme Court has raised concerns over the increasing use of AI by lawyers to draft petitions, which has resulted in the citation of non-existent judgments, a phenomenon referred to as “hallucination.” This issue complicates judicial proceedings, requiring judges to meticulously verify every quoted paragraph. Additionally, high courts have reprimanded parties for presenting AI-generated arguments containing fabricated case law. There is a pressing need for rigorous verification to maintain the integrity of legal processes.
