Rebellious Russians Attack From Ukraine, Coinciding with Ukrainian Drone Strikes
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Soldiers gathered in a Ukrainian farmhouse, preparing for a daring night assault into Russia. Their kits included rifles, machine guns, grenade launchers, spare batteries, red and white flashlights, all necessary for a stealthy mission.

These soldiers were Russians who had turned against President Vladimir V. Putin and were now fighting for the Ukrainian side. Their goal was to breach Russian defenses to allow another unit to advance with tanks and armored vehicles.

Fierce fighting had been ongoing along Russia’s southern border for five days, the most significant ground attacks into Russia since its invasion of Ukraine two years ago. Ukrainian military intelligence supported exile groups in these assaults, timed to disrupt stability as Putin sought reelection.

As the conflict escalated, shopping malls and schools in the Belgorod region were closed for safety. Ukraine had been increasingly bold in launching attacks inside Russia, including sabotaging railroads and hitting refineries with drones.

The attacks diverted Russian air defenses, impacted the oil economy, and unnerved Russians. Despite setbacks, Ukraine continued to press forward in the conflict. The assaults were part of a broader effort to resist Putin during the election period.

The attacks took place along a 100-mile stretch of the border, involving tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery. Russian forces repelled the assaults, destroying tanks and armored vehicles. Ukrainian drones targeted Russian oil refineries, causing fires and disrupting operations.

Exiled Russian nationalists and ethnic minorities were recruited to support the attacks. The assaults aimed to destabilize the border region and challenge Putin’s assumption of immunity from retaliation. The ultimate goal was to hold territory inside Russia.

Despite setbacks and challenges, the Ukrainian-backed groups remained determined to continue their incursions into Russia. The soldiers faced difficulties and setbacks during their missions, but they persevered in their efforts to challenge Russian forces and disrupt the status quo.
