A new Surface Movement Radar (SMR-4) system has been installed at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport following a midair collision in January 2025 that resulted in 67 fatalities. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that this technology will enhance air traffic controllers’ ability to monitor the movement of aircraft and vehicles on runways and taxiways, especially under poor visibility conditions. The SMR-4 provides controllers with a clearer overview of airport operations, marking Reagan Airport as the sixth facility to adopt this system. An investment of $30.5 million will be allocated over the next three years to further upgrade safety and technology at the airport. The installation comes in response to the tragic collision between American Airlines Flight 5342 and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter, leading to a federal acknowledgment of liability and highlighting failures in airspace safety management.

Why It Matters

The installation of the new radar system underscores the ongoing efforts to improve aviation safety in the United States after the tragic collision over the Potomac River. Investigations revealed systemic failures in airspace design and oversight by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Army, prompting a federal response to enhance airport safety measures. The National Transportation Safety Board’s investigation highlighted serious safety gaps that had existed prior to the incident, emphasizing the need for technological advancements like the SMR-4 to prevent future accidents. The substantial investment in upgrades at Reagan Airport reflects a broader commitment to ensuring safer air travel across the country.
