Teen expresses concern over hockey association’s failure to report serious complaints to police

A teenage hockey player has alleged sexual abuse by an employee of the North Harbour Hockey Association (NHHA). The girl’s father claims that NHHA’s chief executive informed them that the association could not support her decision to report the incident to the police. Following these allegations, the father has lodged a complaint with the Sports Integrity Commission against the CEO and NHHA leadership, particularly after the employee was charged with indecently assaulting two teenagers. The father argues that sports organizations should be legally required to notify authorities of serious allegations involving minors. NHHA chief executive Michelle Bentham has not commented on the allegations made by the father and daughter when approached this week.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about the reporting and handling of sexual abuse allegations within sports organizations, particularly those involving minors. Historically, many sports associations have faced criticism for their inadequate responses to abuse claims. The failure to report serious allegations can perpetuate a culture of silence that allows abuse to continue unchecked. In recent years, increased scrutiny from advocacy groups and regulatory bodies has led to calls for stricter laws requiring organizations to report such allegations to authorities, emphasizing the need for accountability in safeguarding young athletes.
