Raskin to Propose Bill for Review of White House Renovations

Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin plans to introduce the “People’s White House Historic Preservation Act” to require federal reviews for White House renovations, such as Trump’s $300 million ballroom project, which currently lacks oversight under the National Historic Preservation Act. The bill mandates a Section 106 review, allowing public input, following criticism over the demolition of the East Wing without formal scrutiny. Although Raskin’s bill has 27 Democratic co-sponsors, its passage is uncertain with Republicans controlling the House. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has filed a lawsuit against the ballroom construction, arguing that no president can alter the White House without public review.
