Giant phantom jellyfish filmed in deep sea

At a depth of 830 feet off the Argentinian coast, the Schmidt Ocean Institute captured rare footage of a giant phantom jellyfish, measuring 10 meters, using a remotely operated vehicle. This elusive species, Stygiomedusa gigantea, has only been documented about 100 times since its discovery in 1899 and is known for its long mouth arms used to capture prey. Typically found in the twilight zone of the ocean, it has a gelatinous body that is difficult to study, making ROVs the best method for observation. The jellyfish has been sighted in various locations but remains one of the largest invertebrate predators in the deep sea.
