New radio telescope array to be constructed in Nevada

Nestled in the Nevada desert, the Great Basin will soon host the Deep Synoptic Array (DSA), the world’s most sensitive radio telescope array. Led by the California Institute of Technology, the project recently secured the necessary funding to proceed with construction. The DSA will consist of 1,650 individual radio dishes designed to study phenomena such as supermassive black holes, pulsars, and fast radio bursts. This telescope will be capable of surveying the sky 100 times faster than previous ground-based telescopes, potentially doubling the known radio sources in the universe within the first 24 hours of operation. Each dish will measure about 20 feet across and cover more than 123 square miles in White Pine County, with construction expected to begin next year and conclude by 2029.

Why It Matters

The Deep Synoptic Array represents a significant advancement in radio astronomy, harnessing a unique combination of sensitivity and imaging capability. Historically, radio telescopes have either been large single dishes or smaller arrays; the DSA aims to blend the advantages of both. This project is essential for understanding cosmic phenomena and expanding our knowledge of the universe, as radio waves provide crucial data about the structure and behavior of distant celestial objects. The funding from Schmidt Sciences underscores the growing interest in astronomical research and the importance of maintaining interference-free environments for such sensitive instruments.
