Captain Antoine Forest, who tragically lost his life in a plane crash at New York’s LaGuardia Airport last month, will be honored today in his hometown of Coteau-du-Lac, Quebec. The incident occurred on March 22 when Air Canada Express Flight 8646, operated by Jazz Aviation, collided with a fire truck on the runway, resulting in the deaths of both pilots, including First Officer MacKenzie Gunther. The crash also injured over 40 passengers and crew members, with one flight attendant being ejected from the aircraft. Antoine Forest, aged 30, had been employed by Jazz Aviation since December 2022. A visitation is scheduled for later today, and the Jazz Master Executive Council has invited fellow crew members to support Forest’s family by wearing their pilot uniforms.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights the ongoing safety challenges faced in aviation, particularly in busy airports such as LaGuardia. The crash of Air Canada Express Flight 8646 resulted in significant loss of life and injuries, raising concerns about runway safety protocols and emergency response measures. In recent years, aviation authorities have scrutinized operational practices to mitigate risks associated with ground collisions. The repatriation of the pilots’ bodies also underscores the emotional toll and community impact of aviation accidents, prompting discussions about support systems for families affected by such tragedies.
