Quantum Messages Travel 254 km Using Existing Infrastructure For the First Time

Researchers in Germany have achieved a significant milestone in quantum communications by successfully demonstrating coherent quantum communications over 254 km of existing commercial telecom fiber, marking the first real-world deployment of such a system without cryogenic cooling. Utilizing coherence-based twin-field quantum key distribution, this system allows for secure information distribution across long distances and connects three data centers in Frankfurt, Kehl, and Kirchfeld. This advancement indicates that advanced quantum communication protocols can effectively operate over existing telecom infrastructure, as published in the journal Nature.
