Pupils from the National School of the Arts are set to debut their original musical, “On the List: Broadway the NSA Way,” at the Lesedi Theatre on August 6. This production tackles themes such as artificial intelligence, influencer culture, and the challenges faced by young creatives. Written and choreographed by students from grades 8 to 12, the musical is set in 2026 and follows a young director seeking South Africa’s next talent while highlighting the behind-the-scenes reality of auditions and industry pressures. Co-director Khaya Ndlovu Mpehle emphasized the importance of drawing inspiration from the students’ personal experiences to create authentic characters. The production aims to foster leadership and growth among participants while engaging the audience with relatable content.

Why It Matters

The National School of the Arts has a history of nurturing young talent in South Africa, providing a platform for students to explore their artistic abilities. This musical not only showcases the skills of aspiring performers but also addresses contemporary societal issues that resonate with today’s youth. By focusing on themes relevant to the current cultural landscape, such as the impact of social media and the pressure of artistic careers, the production reflects the broader challenges facing young creatives in the entertainment industry. Supporting initiatives like this helps to promote the arts and encourage youth engagement in creative fields.
