Pub landlord retains giant St George’s cross outside his establishment

A landlord in Wiltshire has successfully retained a St George’s Cross painted on his pub, the Moonrakers Inn, which had faced scrutiny after a local complaint suggested it resembled “the headquarters of the National Front.” Jerry Kunkler, who has run the pub since 1981, originally painted the cross in 2016 to support national sports teams and repainted it for the World Cup in 2022. Following the complaint, Wiltshire Council investigated the matter, ultimately recommending that the flag be removed, citing it as detrimental to the building’s character. However, in a recent council meeting, members voted five to three in favor of allowing the decoration to remain, concluding it did not harm the Grade II listed building or the surrounding Conservation Area. Kunkler expressed relief and satisfaction with the decision, believing the flag does not detract from the pub’s heritage.

Why It Matters

This case illustrates the ongoing tension between heritage regulations and community expressions of nationalism. The Moonrakers Inn is a Grade II listed building, which means any alterations must be carefully scrutinized to preserve historical integrity. The decision to allow the St George’s Cross to remain reflects a growing recognition of the importance of local identity and sentiment, particularly in the context of sporting events that foster community pride. Additionally, this outcome may set a precedent for similar cases involving patriotic symbols on historical structures, influencing future planning decisions in conservation areas across the UK.
