Summary
Andrew Thorpe, a prisoner awaiting trial for attempted murder, has been sentenced to life in prison after fatally attacking fellow inmate Jonathon Thornton at HMP Nottingham. The brutal assault, motivated by a racist remark made by Thornton, resulted in a catastrophic brain injury that led to Thornton’s death two weeks later. Thorpe, who was also found guilty of a separate attempted murder charge for stabbing another man, will serve a minimum of 35 years before being eligible for parole.
