Pressure Grows on UK PM Keir Starmer as Rivals Circle

Wes Streeting, a key rival of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has publicly supported Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham as a potential challenger to Starmer following a disastrous local election result for the Labour Party. More than 80 MPs have called for Starmer’s resignation, while four junior ministers have stepped down. Burnham would need to win a special by-election in Makerfield, northwest England, after Labour lawmaker Josh Simons resigned to make way for him. The Labour Party’s deputy leader, Lucy Powell, and the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers have also endorsed Burnham’s bid. However, Burnham’s path to challenging Starmer would require approval from Labour’s National Executive Committee and gathering support from 81 Labour MPs.

Why It Matters

The backing of Andy Burnham by key figures within the Labour Party signals a potential challenge to Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s leadership following recent controversies and internal turmoil. Burnham’s bid for a by-election and possible challenge against Starmer could have significant implications for the future direction of the party and the UK’s political landscape. The outcome of this leadership struggle may shape Labour’s policies and electoral prospects in the coming years.
