Preservation group files lawsuit against Trump administration over reflecting pool color change

A cultural nonprofit has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, seeking to halt the repainting of the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall to “American Flag Blue.” The Cultural Landscape Foundation argues that the project is unlawful and should revert to its original color until proper Congressional procedures are followed. The lawsuit aims to stop the work overseen by President Trump, who personally selected the new color, which he claims will enhance the pool’s appearance. The suit contends that the historic pool’s design is fundamentally altered by the new color, which detracts from its reflective quality and historical significance. The White House defends the project, stating it will improve the visitor experience and includes a new filtration system to address maintenance issues.

Why It Matters

The Reflecting Pool, located between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, is a significant historical feature, having been part of the National Mall since its completion in 1922. The lawsuit highlights concerns about adherence to the National Historic Preservation Act, which mandates consultation with experts before altering historic sites. With the current administration facing multiple legal challenges regarding changes to other historic sites, this case exemplifies ongoing tensions over the preservation of cultural heritage versus modernization efforts. The federal government has allocated $13.1 million for the project, raising questions about contract bidding processes and the prioritization of historical integrity.
