The Portland Fire secured their first victory in franchise history, defeating the New York Liberty 98-96 in a thrilling matchup. Second-year guard Sarah Ashlee Barker scored the game-winning basket as time expired, capping a dramatic finish. The Liberty, missing key players Sabrina Ionescu and Satou Sabally, still had All-Stars Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones on the court. Despite this, Bridget Carleton led the Fire with a career-high 26 points, including pivotal 3-pointers that helped Portland regain the lead multiple times. In the final seconds, after a tie at 96, an offensive three-second violation by New York set the stage for Barker’s heroics. The Fire, still without two roster members due to injury, managed to claim their historic win.
