Josh Carr, the new coach of Port Adelaide, acknowledges that he underestimated North Melbourne in his debut match, which resulted in a 46-point loss. As the team prepares to face Essendon at the Adelaide Oval this Sunday, Carr is on high alert, emphasizing the importance of preparing for the opponent’s best performance. He highlighted Essendon’s strong first quarter against Hawthorn despite their overall poor showing, warning his players to remain connected and focused. Carr took responsibility for his team’s defensive shortcomings against North Melbourne, stating he must hold both himself and the players accountable. He plans to utilize Jason Horne-Francis in attack as he continues to recover from foot surgeries, aiming for consistency in his performance after contributing with 12 touches and a goal in the previous match.
Why It Matters
This match is significant as it marks Carr’s second opportunity to establish his coaching style and improve Port Adelaide’s performance after a disappointing start to the season. The focus on defensive cohesion underscores the challenges the team faces in the highly competitive AFL landscape. Historically, Port Adelaide has been known for its strong defensive strategies, and the team’s ability to adapt could impact their season trajectory. The performance of players like Horne-Francis, a former No. 1 draft pick, is crucial, as his development could play a pivotal role in the team’s success moving forward.
