Pornhub will resume access for select UK users after a three-month suspension of services due to age verification requirements initiated by the Online Safety Act. In February, the site blocked unregistered users as part of its response to increased traffic on non-compliant platforms. However, on Tuesday, Aylo, the parent company of Pornhub, announced that Apple users who confirmed their age through the latest iOS update would regain access. The new iOS version introduced device-level age verification, which Aylo claims is the most effective method for enforcing age restrictions. Prior to this change, Pornhub’s traffic plummeted by 77%, highlighting the significant impact of the new regulations on adult content websites in the UK.
Why It Matters
The Online Safety Act, which mandates age verification for adult content in the UK, is reshaping how such platforms operate. Aylo’s response to the law reflects a growing trend among online services to comply with regulations designed to protect minors. The introduction of device-based age verification by Apple represents a significant technological advancement in ensuring compliance with these laws, potentially influencing similar actions by other platforms. As the regulatory landscape evolves, the consequences for adult content providers could lead to further shifts in user access and traffic dynamics.
