The most popular baby names in England and Wales for 2025 have been announced, with Olivia securing the top spot for girls for the tenth consecutive year. For boys, Muhammad, Noah, and Leo ranked as the top three, with Leo surpassing Oliver. Olivia was favored in three of nine English regions and throughout Wales, while Muhammad was the most popular name in four regions of England but only ranked 34th in Wales. In total, there were 585,396 live births recorded, with 2,386 girls named Olivia and 5,957 boys named Muhammad, accounting for 1.4% of all names registered. Notably, new entries in the top 100 included names like Eliana and Vincent, while Jessica and Ellie saw significant drops in popularity, falling out of the top 100 altogether.

Why It Matters

Understanding the trends in baby names offers insights into cultural shifts and societal influences. Olivia’s enduring popularity reflects a broader trend towards classic names, while the rise of names like Eliana and Vincent indicates changing preferences among new parents. The data not only highlights what names are currently favored but also provides a historical context for naming conventions in England and Wales. With varying regional preferences, this information can inform discussions about cultural identity and demographic changes within these countries.
