Polls have opened for Zambia’s presidential election, with incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema seeking a second term amid heightened economic concerns. Over 8.7 million registered voters will decide whether Hichilema’s reforms have alleviated widespread frustrations over living costs, as more than 70% of Zambians live on less than $3 a day. His main challenger, Brian Mundubile of the newly formed NRPUP party, has raised concerns about election fairness and seeks a “national reset” to address divisions in the country. Results are expected by August 17.
