What You Need to Know
• A recent poll found that 66 percent of Americans believe climate change is occurring, down from 73 percent in September 2025.
• Thirty percent of respondents reported that extreme heat had a “major impact” on their outdoor activities this year.
• Approximately 60 percent of the United States was in a state of drought as of May, with 20 percent facing extreme drought conditions.

A new poll conducted by The Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research revealed that 66 percent of American adults believe climate change is happening, a decrease from 73 percent in September 2025. The survey, which included 1,165 participants in late July, indicated that 30 percent reported extreme heat had a “major impact” on their outdoor activities, an increase from 21 percent in July 2024. Additionally, the number of respondents whose vacation and travel plans were significantly affected by heat rose from 8 percent to 15 percent. The poll also highlighted that exercise routines, sleep patterns, and commutes are increasingly impacted by rising temperatures, particularly among those in the Midwest and West Coast. Climatologists from Virginia Tech University noted that about 60 percent of the U.S. was experiencing drought conditions as of May, with severe drought affecting areas like Colorado and the Southeast.

Why It Matters

Understanding public perception of climate change is crucial as it influences policy decisions and environmental initiatives. The decline in belief in climate change, despite increasing personal experiences with extreme heat, raises questions about public awareness and education regarding climate issues. The ongoing drought conditions, particularly in the Midwest and Southeast, highlight the tangible effects of climate change on daily life and infrastructure. As extreme weather events become more frequent, the implications for agriculture, energy consumption, and public health are significant.
