In Frumushika-Nova, Ukraine, a monument of Soviet leader Josef Stalin stands in a statuary garden alongside statues of Vladimir Lenin and Karl Marx. The garden, known as the “Museum of the Totalitarian System of the USSR and Monuments of Socialist Realism,” was created by entrepreneur Oleksandr Palariev to remind visitors of the brutality of authoritarian systems that ruled Ukraine in the 20th century. Palariev started collecting the statues in 2012, some of which were borrowed while others were purchased. The statues serve as a reminder of the region’s history, as Ukraine attempts to erase traces of Russian influence.
