Peter Jackson has confirmed he is returning to work on a sequel to The Adventures of Tintin, a project he initially planned to direct after Steven Spielberg’s first film in 2011. At the Cannes Film Festival, Jackson revealed that he and his collaborator, Fran Walsh, are actively rewriting the script. Jackson expressed excitement about re-entering the Tintin universe, acknowledging the long delay that followed Spielberg’s film, which grossed approximately $374 million. This sequel has faced challenges due to its high production costs and the evolution of performance capture technology since the original film. Although there is currently no release date or production timeline, Jackson’s renewed commitment has sparked interest among fans.
Why It Matters
The original Tintin film, which was a significant adaptation of Hergé’s comic series, paved the way for future animated and performance-capture projects. Jackson’s involvement is crucial as he brings extensive experience from his work on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. The advancements in visual effects technology since 2011 have made it more feasible for studios to undertake high-budget projects like Tintin. Moreover, the film’s previous box office performance indicates a potential audience interest that may justify a sequel, especially with Jackson’s return to the franchise.
