Perth Lynx made a strong start in the WNBL grand final series by defeating Southside Flyers 101-79 in the opening game.

Playing at Melbourne Sports Centre, the Lynx maintained control of the game after taking a 26-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Heading into the fourth quarter, they were ahead 82-53 before securing the win despite the Flyers’ late surge, outscoring them 26-19 in the final period.

Teammates Anneli Maley and Aari McDonald each contributed 15 points.

Opals legend Lauren Jackson, who may still participate in the Paris Olympics after previously ruling it out, led the Flyers with 21 points.

The Lynx, finishing fourth in the regular season, advanced to the grand final series by defeating minor premiers Townsville Fire.

The Flyers earned their spot in the season finale by overcoming Melbourne Boomers.

Game two of the grand final series will be held at Perth’s Bendat Basketball Centre on Thursday evening.

If the Flyers manage to tie the series, they will have home-court advantage in game three, scheduled for next Sunday if necessary.
