Penn State recruits 2027 cornerback from Virginia Tech

Former Penn State head coach James Franklin’s departure in October prompted significant changes in the Nittany Lions’ recruiting landscape, leading to multiple decommitments and some players transferring to Virginia Tech. In the wake of this upheaval, Penn State has begun to rebuild its recruiting class, recently securing commitments from several prospects, including three-star cornerback Zachary Gleason Jr. from the 2027 class. Gleason Jr., who had offers from both Penn State and Virginia Tech, chose to stay in his home state, giving the Nittany Lions an early victory in their recruiting efforts against Franklin’s new team. The 6-foot, 170-pound cornerback from Pittsburgh had an impressive junior season, recording 43 tackles, four tackles for loss, three interceptions, and one pick-six. He is the second cornerback to commit to Penn State within a week.

Why It Matters

The recruitment of Zachary Gleason Jr. is significant as it marks a turn in Penn State’s strategy following a turbulent coaching change, aiming to stabilize and strengthen its recruiting pipeline. Historically, coaching transitions often impact recruiting classes, with players reassessing their commitments. By securing Gleason Jr., Penn State not only adds a promising talent to its roster but also begins to re-establish its presence in the region’s competitive recruiting landscape. The potential for local talent to remain with the Nittany Lions can enhance the program’s long-term prospects and foster a stronger connection with the community.
