Los Angeles Dodgers two-way player Shohei Ohtani is set to make his first start of the 2026 season against the Cleveland Guardians. Ohtani, the last member of the Dodgers’ rotation to take the mound, had an impressive spring training, allowing three runs in 8.1 innings across two appearances. He struck out 15 batters in total, including 11 in one game against the Los Angeles Angels. Last season, Ohtani posted a 2.87 ERA over 14 starts for the Dodgers and aims to replicate that success this year. However, he has struggled at the plate so far this season, recording only two hits in 12 at-bats through the first four games, although he has contributed with two runs scored and two walks. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts expressed confidence that Ohtani and his teammates will improve as the season progresses.
Why It Matters
Shohei Ohtani’s dual-threat capability as a pitcher and hitter makes him a unique asset in Major League Baseball, and his performance can significantly impact the Dodgers’ success. His career pitching statistics show an even 3.00 ERA over 528 innings, with a fourth-place finish in Cy Young voting, highlighting his effectiveness on the mound. The Dodgers’ reliance on Ohtani, especially after his solid performance in 2025, underscores his importance to the team’s pitching rotation and overall competitiveness in the league. Additionally, Ohtani’s ability to bounce back from early-season struggles could be crucial for the Dodgers as they aim for a successful campaign in 2026.
