Penn State basketball loses leading scorer to transfer portal

Penn State basketball is experiencing significant roster changes as guard Freddie Dilione V has entered the NCAA transfer portal, becoming the second player to do so for the 2025-26 season. Dilione V was a key contributor last season, averaging 14.0 points and 3.2 rebounds per game, and was set to be the only returning senior. His departure leaves the Nittany Lions with three available scholarship spots for the upcoming season. Alongside Dilione V, guard Melih Tunca has also opted to explore transfer options. This marks Dilione’s second time entering the transfer portal, having previously moved to Penn State from Tennessee two years ago.

Why It Matters

The transfer portal has become a significant factor in college basketball, allowing players greater flexibility in their collegiate careers. Penn State’s current situation reflects a broader trend of roster turnover in the sport, where teams often see multiple players seeking new opportunities each offseason. With Dilione V and Tunca’s exits, the Nittany Lions are left with a young roster, which could impact their competitiveness in the 2026-2027 season. The lack of senior leadership may also challenge team cohesion and development as they prepare for the upcoming year.
