Pedestrians account for 41% of festive season road fatalities in SA

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy reported that 1 502 people died in 1 234 crashes during the festive season in South Africa, with pedestrians accounting for 41% of fatalities. Law enforcement issued over 711,000 traffic fines and made over 9,550 arrests, including 3,840 for drunk driving. Concerns were raised about reckless pedestrian behavior, the need for increased awareness, stricter penalties, and the ongoing danger of spike traps targeting motorists.
